The first part of the prophecy is built around the structure of act, inquiry, and explanation. Its central concern is national unification and the ascension of one king over all (Ezek. 37:15–22). The subsequent reference to the purification of the people is themarically secondary (v. 23). The ensuing part further develops the theme of monarchy (adding such terms as “shepherd” and “prince”)1 and national purification. It focuses on settlement in the Land and the new Sanctuary.
